Why Care For Trees and Shrubs

The care of trees and shrubs is a never ending obligation. Trees and shrubs add significant value and beauty to a property and their preservation is an investment. Trees and shrubs like turf need care, but unlike turf being one species, the trees and shrubs on your property usually cover many species and varieties.  Because of this and the fact that different plants are susceptible to different insects, any Plant Care Program must be prepared to address the many insects, diseases and cultural problems that may occur in a widely varied landscape.

Our Tree and Shrub Program aims to provide a comprehensive approach to the reoccurring problems that are found in landscapes of our area. Using our 45 years of experience we analyze your landscape and develop a pest and disease program specifically designed to address the problems we expect.  Our goal is to minimize not eliminate damage caused by pests and diseases. In a general insects and diseases occur specific times of the year and timely application can provide effective control.  

For example, spring, April, is the best time to apply controls for Scale type insects and to begin disease prevention on certain plants.  

Late spring, May, is the season that brings chewing insects, gypsy moth, inch worms, canker worms, etc. in addition aphids and other sucking insects begin to emerge.  

Early summer, June, is the season for mites, which can multiply every ten days! 

Summer is the time when Bagworms and Japanese beetles begin to eat. 

These are some of the most probable problems we expect to see in your landscape but other problems such as Birch/Holly Leaf Minor, Borer Insects, diseases of Dogwood and Crabapple must also be addressed.

 As you can see it can be difficult to minimize applications and provide effective control of pests we KNOW will be there others that nature sends periodically and unexpectedly. 

In summary, most landscapes will need three to four applications per season plus an application of systemic insecticide for any Birch and Holly trees.
